Musitorial – Deer Prudence

musitorial noun, a mashup of music, musings and editorials, music and song that evokes thought and commentary.

Today’s musitorial is a mere shadow of its formative self, a precis of what became a much longer piece that you can read through the link below.

In other words, I got so caught up in the associations that continued to seek other examples (there are many) along the same lines, however inadequate they may be.

I encourage you to read that longer essay of the same title – it follows this post. For now (and for a taste) today’s musitorial is about the sometimes-fatal encounters with deer and moose on the highways at night (another musical referent linked below).

I have amused before about what I see as the slow but steady encroachment of wildlife into “our” world, including my new favourite song, “Aliens are Nice” (Bette and Wallet, Électrique, 2014), linked below. Vulnerable wildlife (deer and moose) either fail to learn from the mistakes of their dead (their deerly departed) or damaged relations or – and as I prefer to view it – are both increasing in numbers and in interest in human use of their planet. The deer just haven’t quite got what it takes to avoid vehicular mishaps – and humans haven’t quite figured out how to keep the wildlife safe while keeping them wild, other than building fences.

They’re checking us out – mark my words. They no longer wish to lie on the sidelines, to share their environment – they want to retake it.

Today’s musitorial once again invokes the Fab Four, this time for their song, “Dear Prudence,” which my left-footed brain sometimes mashes up with “Sexy Sadie,” for some reason. Both songs are from The Beatles 1968 album, The Beatles.

Take care out there, fellow aliens.
