Musitorial – Hungry, aye

musitorial noun, a mashup of music, musings and editorials, music and song that evokes thought and commentary.

Today’s musitorial was inspired during a recent vacation trip in Newfoundland and Labrador. Well, not Labrador, but that’s part of the official name of the province; considering the fact that the Labrador land mass is far greater than the island of Newfoundland, politicians have rightly been drilling the full name into our collective psyche.

Anyway, our trip was confined to the western region of the island of Newfoundland, including a day trip to Burgeo, an awesome coastal town at the end of an awesome but lengthy drive from the Trans Canada at Stephenville, along Rte. 480 across taiga terrain known locally as ‘the barrens.’ This is but one section of the vast barrens across the central body the island of Newfoundland.

I wondered if 480 [rte. #] is the highway’s permanent number, or if that’s a pothole count. Then again, perhaps “burgeo” is Portugese for “minefield.” Speaking of potholes (as we all do from time to time), I notice that in general, posted speed limits on roads are on average about 10 km/hr lower than in Nova Scotia. Perhaps it’s a cost-saving measure - rather than upgrading or repaving roads, just make us drive slower. It just might work!

Anyway, when we weren’t dodging potholes to get to Burgeo, we were exploring its many delights. The visit being in May there were rather limited offerings by way of coffee and cake, and therein lies my story for today.

Readers may be vaguely aware that a recent stroke robbed me of a portion of my eyesight, that being peripheral vision with my right eye. It’s difficult to explain, but things to the right are often obscured, unless or until I move my eyes to make sure I’ve seen it all. (Don’t worry, you’re safe. I no longer drive a car because of this impairment.)

As an example, I often miss an object or even a person from the scene before me. So, when we were on the hunt for someplace to have lunch in Burgeo, all the local signage saying “Burgeo” I saw as “Burge,” and my brain filled in the word as “Burger.” Seeing all those signs advertising “Burgers” made me even hungrier, but there were no burgers in Burgeo.

So, with a tilt of my hat to all the nice people we met in Burgeo, Newfoundland and Labrador, here’s today’s musitorial: “Hungry Eyes” (Eric Carmen, 1987, Dirty Dancing, Vestron Pictures).

Burgeo, “One look at you and I can't disguise, I've got Hungry eyes”
